Getting Houston County Court Records
The Houston County Circuit Clerk keeps the official records for Circuit and District proceedings. Online viewing runs through paid Just One Look or an Alacourt subscription. Prefer a local route? Visit the clerk's division counters. Phone staff can walk you through the process and quote a cost. A precise written request can also go by mail. The clerk's official pages list no general record-request email or fax. No drop box or guaranteed public terminal appears either.
- Identify Circuit, District, municipal, or probate custody before requesting a record.
- Use the full case number and the case action summary to identify the exact document title and docket date.
- Choose paid online viewing, a division phone call, an in-person inspection, or a mailed request.
- State whether inspection, a plain copy, or a certified copy is needed and ask for a current fee quote.
- Follow the division's payment and pickup or mail instructions. Do not send an assumed fee.
Mail requests go to Houston County Circuit Clerk, P.O. Drawer 6406, Dothan, AL 36302. Spell out your contact details, the court and division, the full case number and style, the document title and date, and the copy type you want. Wait for staff to confirm the amount, then send a return envelope with your payment.
Houston County Record Layers
Three layers serve three different needs. A case action summary is a dated index of filings, settings, orders, and disposition. A filed document is the actual complaint, motion, order, or judgment behind one entry. A certified copy is a clerk-authenticated reproduction of either. One caution applies here. An entry reading "Order entered" does not reveal the order's terms, and an image pulled from Alacourt is not certified just because the system is official.
| Layer | What It Provides | Where to Get It |
|---|---|---|
| Case action summary | Chronology, settings, status, and disposition | Just One Look, Alacourt, or the proper clerk division |
| Filed document | The text of a pleading, order, or judgment | Permitted portal image or clerk inspection/copy |
| Certified copy | Clerk authentication for official use | The court clerk holding the original file |
Court Record Types
Houston County court records split by jurisdiction and by document type. Circuit Criminal holds the felony files. Circuit Civil keeps major civil cases. District Criminal covers most state misdemeanors and preliminary felony matters. District Traffic, in turn, handles state citations. District Civil and Small Claims keep their own records. Domestic Relations, Child Support, and Juvenile operate as separate functions. Municipal clerks retain city ordinance and city traffic files. Probate Court holds wills, estates, guardianships, and other probate matters.
- Case action summaries and setting histories
- Complaints, petitions, answers, motions, and service returns
- Judicial orders, judgments, sentencing orders, and dispositions
- Public exhibits and document images when access is permitted
- Transcripts prepared by a court reporter through a separate request
The custodian matters as much as the category. Ask that city directly for a municipal disposition, unless an appeal opened a new Circuit Court record.
Houston County Decree Requests
Divorce decrees follow a simple local route. Call Domestic Relations at (334) 677-4805 for an estimated copy cost, or stop by Room 105 at the Houston County Courthouse. Bring cash or a money order payable to Houston County Circuit Clerk. The division does not take credit cards for decree copies. An ATM sits in the lobby. Keep in mind this payment rule belongs to that one request, so do not assume every division works the same way.
Before mailing payment: Give Domestic Relations the full case number, document needed, and certification choice, then ask for the current total.
Inside a Houston County Court Record
A full public case file can hold far more than the summary shows. The header gives the court, division, number, style, filed date, judge, and status. Pleadings state what each party filed. Service returns document delivery efforts. Orders show how a judge ruled. Settings record when the court planned to act. Later resets may replace earlier dates, though. Financial lines can reflect fees, costs, fines, or payments, depending on the case.
| Case Number | The division, filing year, and sequence used to locate the file. |
|---|---|
| Pleadings | Complaints, petitions, answers, motions, affidavits, and notices filed by parties. |
| Orders & Judgments | Signed rulings and the court's recorded resolution of issues or the case. |
| Case Action Summary | The chronological index of filings, settings, court actions, and disposition. |
| Exhibits | Filed evidence or attachments, subject to access limits, custody, or return. |
| Transcript | A word-for-word account prepared by the court reporter, not an ordinary clerk copy. |
Want a transcript? Identify the judge, the hearing date, and the proceeding, then request the reporter contact and a current estimate under Rule 29.
Houston County Archived Court Records
Older files may sit in archives or on microfilm. Houston County publishes no public retention schedule or local archive-search fee. Call the right division before sending any money. Ask whether staff can locate the file, whether it stays on site, and how inspection or copying would work. A precise case number, party style, court, and likely year will cut the search time. Electronic imaging does not make every historical page downloadable. The current courthouse opened in 1962. It was remodeled in 2002, yet many county records predate both the building and the statewide electronic chain. For the format and location of an old file, the clerk remains the best source.
Fees and Certified Copies
A certified copy costs more than a plain one because the clerk authenticates it. Plain copies just reproduce the record. Copy prices, certifications, search fees, electronic signatures, and transcript charges all fall under Alabama Rule of Judicial Administration 29. Houston County publishes no complete local price list, though. Ask the division that holds the court record for a quote before you pay. A per-page charge from another Alabama county is not a Houston County fee.
| Item | Houston County Finding |
|---|---|
| Online case action summary | Paid through Just One Look or an Alacourt subscription; current transaction price appears inside the service. |
| Plain paper copy | No Houston County amount was located; request a division quote. |
| Certified copy | Rule 29 governs; confirm the exact local amount before payment. |
| Divorce decree | Call Domestic Relations for the estimate; cash or money order, no credit card. |
| Archive or microfilm search | No Houston County fee was located; ask before sending funds. |
| Transcript | Order through the reporter; price depends on transcript type and pages. |

Houston County Federal Court Records
Federal records live in a separate system from Houston County court records. The county sits in the Southern Division of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. PACER handles federal docket access for civil, criminal, and bankruptcy cases. CM/ECF is the filing side. Alacourt will not reach those files. One more quirk: the Dothan federal building opens only when court is in session. It is not staffed daily for filings. The Middle District courthouse page documents the Dothan federal location.
A photo helps you spot the hearing site. But filings and routine clerk work go through the staffed Montgomery office, not this unstaffed building. The official PACER portal is the federal search channel.
PACER shows numbered federal docket entries with document links, unlike Alabama's case action summary format.
Sealed Records and Public Access
Most routine Houston County Circuit and District case information is public, though web access takes a paid account and document viewing has limits. Not everything clears that bar. Juvenile, youthful-offender, adoption, sealed, expunged, and similar confidential matters never move through an ordinary request. Copies released to the public must also leave out protected identifiers. Keep in mind that a case summary can sit in plain view while one exhibit or image inside it stays sealed or restricted.
Key Rules:
Alabama Court-Record Privacy and Confidentiality Rules define access, confidential records, redaction, and sealing.
Rule of Judicial Administration 29 governs copies, certification, searches, and transcript charges.
Ala. Code ยง36-12-40 permits Alabama citizens to inspect and copy public writings, subject to lawful exceptions.
If you are authorized to see restricted material, contact the right division, bring identification, and provide any court order or access code it requires. No public-record request can override the court's confidentiality rules.
Houston County Municipal Record Limits
Municipal payment pages often hold just enough data to settle a ticket. They are not full court-record repositories, though. Ashford makes the point well. Its nCourt channel handles online citation payment. Court sessions and requests for disposition copies follow the city's own court and City Hall procedures. A payment receipt is not a clerk-issued disposition and never counts as a certified copy. The Ashford nCourt page shows that narrow municipal transaction channel.
That official payment page exists for one job. It takes a citation payment, and that is all. Treat a receipt from it as proof of payment, not as the complete Houston County court record for the case.
Houston County Bankruptcy Records
Bankruptcy is federal business. Houston County's state clerk does not hold those files. Bankruptcy cases live in a separate system. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Alabama hears them. PACER carries the federal docket along with the filed documents.
The split matters for a docket search. A state civil dispute might appear in Alacourt under its own case number. A bankruptcy filed afterward gets a fresh federal number and a separate entry sequence. To confirm where a Houston County bankruptcy record sits, the bankruptcy court's official portal shows that distinct custodian. It also shows what its docket contains.
The federal portal routes all bankruptcy work where it belongs. So skip Houston County Circuit or District records on that errand; they will not have the file. For state cases, start with the Houston County Case Lookup to find the exact docket entry before ordering any document.
